Weekly summary
I'd like to start doing weekly summaries of things I'm working on and themes for the week.
The major themes for this week:
- Maths
- WYAS
- Ext2
Maths
I started reading Modern Algebra, a Dover text on abstract algebra. It turns out to be heavily based on predicate logic, which I'm woefully rusty at and it doesn't have solutions to the exercises. To address the former, I picked up Kleene's Mathematical Logic book; for the latter, I picked up A Book of Abstract Algebra which has some solutions in it. I also grabbed a copy of Lattice Theory: First Concepts and Distributive Lattices as an impulse buy because Zeeshan mentioned it and Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications because it's useful for CS.
My goal is really to develop a solid foundation for maths beyond just crypto stuff, and to build a background for formally thinking about programming. This plays into making another pass at Haskell.
Write Yourself a Scheme
Tying into Hasp and trying to relearn Haskell is the Write You a Scheme in 48 Hours wikibook. One of things that this would be interesting for attempting to implemented W7 that's the basis for some interesting discussion on the network-spaces mailing list.
I'm still on the parsing section, and trying not to get too hung up on the exercises I'm stuck on.
Ext2
Also tying into the network-spaces discussion, I'm working on a standalone Ext2 package. This could be used with embedded systems, but it would also be nice to port to Haskell. This enables me to use per-application filesystems as disk images in a unikernel system, too. This is a large undertaking, especially since I don't understand ext2 yet. I expect this will take a while.
This week
This week, I hope to get through the parsing section of WYAS mostly intact, spend at least an hour a day on maths, and get further on the Ext2 project.
