ASUS ROG Flow Z13 review

I was looking for a new main laptop that I had a few requirements for:

  1. It needed to run Linux (and preferably Omarchy),
  2. It needed to be able to run local agents comfortably, and
  3. It needed to be in the 12-14" laptop class

I was using a Framework 12, which was just about ideal. However, it couldn't run onboard agents due lack of a suitable graphics card. A friend of mine has the ASUS ROG Flow Z13, and I decided to grab the 64GB model. It's a Strix Halo machine (AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 with Radeon 8060S). I can confirm it does, in fact, run ornith-1.5-35b-a3b comfortably. There are a few caveats:

  • When the GPU is cranking, it gets hot. Really hot. It's fine, so long it's given room to breath.
  • It's a tablet with a keyboard attachment, making it top heavy and a bit of a pain sometimes to stand up. It works and you get used to it, it just needs some getting used to.
  • I found a laptop shell case on Amazon that fits it and makes it a little easier. No helping the very top heavy bit, though I've thought about weighting the keyboard side to help with this.
  • When the GPU is cranking, it will pull 80-90W. The battery will slowly drain if you don't have a big enough power adapter. I end up having to use the 200W brick that comes with it to charge most of the time I'm doing local agent stuff.
  • The power plug and USB-C ports (which you can use to charge, with the above caveat) are on only one side, which is the wrong side for how I use it most of the time. This is probably my biggest annoyance.

As for the goal of being a local-first, offline capable machine: I swapped out the SSD for a 2TB version and apart from a few quirks, it's basically ideal. I do like being able to detach the tablet and take it around when I'm trying to keep an eye on something or watch something. If the Framework 12 was a 64G Strix Halo machine, it would be better, but only because I prefer the traditional laptop form factor (e.g. keyboard half weighs the same or more than the screen half). Price-wise, it was about $1500 for the framework and $2650 for the Z13. That extra thousand for the ability to run agents locally was worth it to me; I still have the Framework 12 if I need a longer-battery life and no local AI.
